DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

We Be the Same was inspired by both the various kinds of relationships I have with other black women and the common threads that define our specific experiences as black women within our culture. Karis and Augusta’s differing attitudes about the death of their troubled mother point to the complex relationships black daughters have with their mothers. We as daughters often find it challenging to break free from our mothers’ shadows and to define ourselves outside of who they are as people. Like the sisters in this film, we have to learn to hold on while letting go.
