Farewell, My Son

If you love him, do you let him go?

ABOUT

Ten years ago in their small village in Nigeria, Ruth’s husband-to-be left her and their young son to make a new life in the United States. Now, as the eleven-year-old Afam approaches his twelfth birthday, his estranged father has returned to take Afam to live with him. Ruth is struggling within herself, unsure whether she can let him go, and with how to break the news to her son, his two siblings, and the rest of the family.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

The idea for Farewell, My Son stems from my childhood life in Nigeria. It visually reflects the ways of life in a small village there, the food, culture, and language, and the countryside with its long dirt roads and open fields. I hope to portray a different view of how typical Nigerian children are raised and the lessons they learn from their parents, and hopefully debunk some of the stereotypes around being African.
