Buried

Some secrets never stay hidden.

ABOUT

Close friends Monica, Ben, Yasmin, Riley, and Daniel go on a camping trip together after their college graduation. During the trip, Ben proposes to Monica and she accepts, despite wanting to come out of the closet to date Yasmin publicly. In her struggle to choose between Ben and Yasmin, Monica begins to have strange encounters with a horned creature.

After a series of nightmares that bleed into her real life, everything comes to a head when the horned creature kidnaps Ben and Yasmin, forcing Monica to finally be honest with herself. Monica breaks up with Ben to be with Yasmin and the horned creature lets them go and disappears.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

As a filmmaker, my ultimate goal is to be as authentic as possible within my work. I have always been someone who has struggled to find the right way to convey how I feel.

Simultaneously, I struggled with understanding why I never felt connected to my work. I always thought, “if I wrote it, then why don’t I feel anything?” It wasn’t until I furthered my education that I realized I was telling stories that I couldn’t identify with. They were stories of people who were a different race than I was and a different orientation. I see now that these stories reflected my own struggle with identity.

Buried exists because it was a way for me to explore all of these feelings about my identity and self-image and what it means to truly be myself. It can be difficult to come to terms with identity, especially for those of us who have gone most of our lives unaware of who we truly are, but as I show with Buried, taking the first step to be honest with yourself is the first step to becoming the person you want to be.
