Rosen

This is the story of a lifetime

ABOUT

Under police suspicion, a locksmith is forced to unlock his closet, revealing inside not the assumed loot but a perfectly unchanged space recalling events from his childhood both beautiful and sad.

Rosen is a locksmith who lives in a small city in China. When he was eight years old, he endured the physical abuse his father committed against his mother, which led to her taking her own life. Twenty years later, Rosen lives with the regret of having lost the only key to the room in which his mother locked herself and suffocated, preventing her rescue by distressed neighbors. Now a professional locksmith, he draws the suspicion of police who take him for a criminal burglarizing homes by leaving them unlocked after his locksmithing. However, all suspicions and secrets will lead back to that fateful lock from his childhood.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

I take inspiration from real events and all the everyday stories that surround us. The most powerful element I see in these stories, which guides me in my filmmaking, is the emotions of the characters.

Good characters provide sustenance for an audience. Rosen suffers a great tragedy in losing his mother, but his longing for a happy family pushes him to face life again and be brave.

Movies capture these human stories in a way that our click-based, fast food culture cannot, and this is the reason I turn back to tradition and pay attention to the shaping of characters.
