DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

In my perspective, creating stories and characters should build on the interactions I have with the people I know. My experience these last two years living in another cultural environment, working toward a degree in filmmaking in Baltimore, has made clear to me the importance of observing and recording the world around me.

Thanks to the internet and technology, we have powerful means of accessing information and using it to remember the past and imagine the future. Some filmmakers choose to salute the classics, while others have a strong desire to explore new possibility. With an eye toward the future, I believe in the necessity of recording the life we experience now. Although I cannot cover all the topics of current life, I direct my camera toward aspects of Chinese culture that have nurtured me from my childhood.

The boundary between narrative and documentary films is blurred for me. I believe in using the aesthetics of narrative films in the production and postproduction of documentaries. My ultimate goal is to establish a figuration—a story—that can touch an audience.
