ABOUT

Last Act is a short, dramatic psychological-thriller, where an African-American male (Cravon) must try and overcome his caucasian acting teacher, Ms. Jewels, to deliver his final monologue . She sadistically grooms him into playing his part. She may have secondary intentions for him as well. Cravon unravels to pass the class for one last act.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

The psychology behind the paranoia of the Black man in America is something I plan to convey through the film in the future, as it is an issue I began to appreciate more through the spotlight on systematic racism. I use the camera to convey my black experience in a way that is more accessible to all audiences, but at the same time is humorous and informative.

During the pandemic, I turned my passion for film into activism, to use my voice and talents to contribute to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. This then led me to create Last Act, which is based on my first acting class at John Hopkins University through the lens of the black experience. I combined this experience with all of my past experiences with white female professors, and applied them to my black male acting teacher.

Filmmaking, a medium used to engage, teach, inspire, and change lives, is my call to action. Now, more than ever, I am focused on increasing diversity/minority representation in the world of cinema.

DIRECTOR BIO

Like almost everyone, Low grew up watching films at the local multiplex with his family. He fondly remembers making popcorn and sneaking in snacks from home; it was one of the few things that he, his sister, and his parents enjoyed doing together. He soon became curious about what was going on behind the screen, which led him to take a film studies class in high school and then major in Cinema at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), one of the top-ranked undergraduate schools for the arts. A double-major in Psychology also informs Low’s creative process, helping him visualize dynamic characters and better convey why those characters do what they do.
