Golden Apple
A true allegory of a nonexistent man.
ABOUT
An elusive thief, Alex, hiding in an abandoned house to avoid his pursuers, meets a mad man who experiences the space as a prison. When the mad man realizes that Alex is able to leave the house, he asks the thief to help him “break out of his prison”, offering him precious golden apple in return. Alex agrees to the mad man’s unreasonable request but has no clue what is in store for him.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
If everyone exists for a reason, “Golden Apple” is just like a result (or an answer) for those people who are looking for one. Does “golden apple” really exist? I believe as long as there are people looking for it, “golen apple” would exist in their heart, even as an illusion, a tangible, beautiful illusion. I try to depict the miseries and struggles they are going to experience: they might misunderstand their initial intention, mistake some goal in front of their eye equal to the “golden apple”; they also might been misunderstood by the society, and locked in an invisible prison as misfits. The vision of the “golden apple” hasn’t vanished or been broken, probably never will, but it will never be complete again. As if they are holding a bitten “golden apple”, and experience a journey that couldn’t end and also couldn’t start over again.
They have probably been considered as a pathetic joke in a lot of people’s eye, but they are the hero in my heart. They are the people I want to spend my life to depict in my movie.

Qianhui Zhang is a director and cinematographer from Tianjin, China. He earned a BA in television, video, and journalism from Tianjin Polytechnic University, and starts making documentaries, music videos, and short films since then. He holds an MFA in filmmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
